Red Rock Canyon hike w/Generation Wild of the Pikes Peak Region

Saturday morning hike with LO Colorado and Generation Wild of the Pikes Peak Region at Red Rock Canyon Open Space in CO Springs

This is a collaboration between Latino Outdoors and Generation Wild of the Pikes Peak Region.Red Rock Canyon is characterized by a series of canyons and ridges sculpted by erosion of the area’s uplifted rock strata. The ridges and canyons offer beautiful views and sheltered enclaves for inspiration, varied terrain for recreation, and a 240 million year slice of sedimentary geology for education. In Section 16, the sedimentary geology is truncated by the Ute Pass Fault where the geology abruptly changes to much older rock. The varied terrain and geology support a wide variety of plant and animal communities. Human use of the area has left a heritage of varied and colorful history including Ute defensive positions, stone quarries, and gold mills. We’ll be hiking the Mesa/Greenlee: 2.85 miles: This loop stretches all the way to the southern tip of the open space and then circles back down. This means it is all uphill the first half and all downhill the second, but the grades are generally moderate. The trails are road-width and usually stay on top of the mesa. They parallel the canyons, providing a good view of the formations although not directly among them. Pikes Peak and Garden of the Gods are also a major part of your view. The sky feels expansive, and it is a fantastic place to enjoy the bright blue of a typical Colorado day or to cloud-watch. Start with the trail at the east end of the west parking lot and follow the natural horseshoe, ignoring the sidetrails. The road becomes Greenlee when it begins turning downward, and it will intersect Mesa again near the bottom.*You will be required to sign a liability waiver prior to the start of the hike*Dogs on leash are welcome on this trail, please let us know on your Eventbrite ticket if you will be bringing your dog. We’ll be providing snacks!!!! We will meet at the west parking lot: https://redrockcanyonopenspace.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/RRC_BrochureMap_6_12_2018_3-1.pdfTrail Info: Distance: 2.85 miles round trip, out-and-back; Elevation Gain: 720ft; Max Elevation: 6,614ft; Skill Level: Moderate; Use: Highly trafficked; Facilities: There are 2 porta potties at the parking lot. What to Wear: Non-cotton shirt, Non-cotton or jeans pant, Sturdy athletic shoes or hiking boots, Wool or synthetic socks if possible, Sun hat (baseball cap, hat with wide brim, visor, etc.) and/or sunglassesPacking List: Daypack or backpack, 1-2 liters of water, Lunch and snacks (sodium and protein are good to include in your meals during this hike), Light rain jacket, Sunscreen SPF 30+, Chapstick or lip balm with sunscreen***If you are in need of gear or transportation, contact us by 8/20/19***Email: janelle.paciencia@latinooutdoors.org or Perez@kidsoutdoors.org----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Esta es una colaboración entre Latino Outdoors y Generation Wild of the Pikes Peak Region.

Free Paddleboarding W/UpaDowna

Stand Up Paddleboarding is the newest of the 6 free/donation based activities UpaDowna offers. It is designed to break down barriers & encourage folks to try the sport of SUP and provide info about where to rent or buy your own equipment. It is amazing to see the empowerment that kids have after they learn how to paddle on their own! It is also very inspiring for adults to find a new, healthy, and fun sport that they can easily do!

Get ahead of the line! Sign the waiver for yourself or everyone in your group before you get to the lake. The waiver only needs to be signed once. When you arrive, just check in with us under the tent! https://waiver.smartwaiver.com/w/5af5ed705265f/web/

Info:
-FREE community paddle party, drop in anytime we are there! Donations are always appreciated!
-NO previous experience necessary! We teach you everything you need to know!
-We provide EVERYTHING you need: a board, paddle, life jacket, and permit
-Find us on the west side of the lake under the UpaDowna tent near the BIG BLUE BUS!
-Feel free to bring your own equipment (kayaks, canoes, boards) or use our boards for free. Prospect Lake requires a permit if you have your own watercraft. Those can be purchased at Sertich Ice Center or the boathouse near the lake
-All ages/skill levels welcome! We ask that kids 8 and under ride with an adult due to possible wind/lightning threats.
-Wear athletic clothing/swimsuits/trunks and sandals or water shoes
-Suggested items: sunscreen, hat, sunglasses w/cord, water, a towel and a change of clothing
-UpaDowna has boards to share. If you would like to rent one, please check out our SUP Social supporting business Pikes Peak Outfitterr or buy one from our sup provider, Shaboomee.
-Due to the popularity of this program, there can be a line for the equipment. It’s suggested to bring other activities to pass the time. There are no reservations, just drop in anytime when we are there.
**WEATHER: usually we do not cancel. Stay tuned to Facebook for the most updated news, or call 719-429-9006 for info. If it's windy, we may ask kids 8-12 to paddle with an adult. If it is rainy, we'll still paddle, if there is lightning, all boards will be taken off the water.
